Miller Argent currently employs a full time archaeologist whose responsibility is to co-ordinate all archaeological works on site.  Miller Argent has also employed a team from the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust who carry out all the main archaeological works on site.

The archaeology within the 'Ffos-y-fran Land Reclamation Scheme' is primarily subject to planning conditions 55 and 56.  These planning conditions state that a programme of work must be submitted and approved by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council prior to the commencement of any works on site and that Miller Argent are to hire an archaeologist who will undertake a watching brief in areas where excavations are not planned.

The archaeological works on site fall into five main areas:

  1. Completion of the archaeological topographical survey
  2. Area specific archaeological excavations
  3. Local archaeological excavations
  4. Conservation and protection of structural remains
  5. Watching briefs during site operations where excavations are not required

All archaeological investigations have now been completed at Ffos-y-fran, which took 18 months to complete.  We are now in the post excavation phase of the project, which involves experts looking at all the artefacts found and writing up all the finding into a report.
